Mark Ryden and Marion Peck Short Film

"Artists Mark Ryden and Marion Peck, the dynamic duo of pop surrealism, made this dark, sweet, and strange short film Sweet Wishes. It's about a dolly, a baby, and a bear who are granted a wish. Peck and Ryden are also publishing a picture book based on the film."

Epicurus on Happiness

"Ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus thought of “friends, freedom and thought” as the path to happiness. In this video popular British philosopher Alain de Botton puts Epicurus’ view into perspective by looking at our modern society and its focus on material things due to advertising."

Denis Darzacq's Floating People

Darzacq_31 "Photos from Denis Darzacq’s new project “Hyper” (here) were all over the internet a couple weeks back and they certainly deserve the attention as fascinating and unnerving images, plus there’s no photoshop involved which makes it all the more interesting.

Here’s a behind the scenes video I found on the Lens Culture blog (here) from his book La Chute.

I suppose the only editorial application of a technique like this would be a fashion story since you need the talented street performers to do the jumps but whenever I see something like this I start to think of all the different ways I can get it into the book. Now, with all the hype certain types of photography can receive on the internet there’s a little extra incentive to find something quickly."

Conrad Bakker's "Consumer Actions"

Picture 1
"Conrad Bakker's 'consumer actions' involve carving and painting slightly sloppy scale replicas of commodity objects and then inserting these into the consumer landscape to be photographed and ultimately "left to drift." conrad reports "their current whereabouts are unknown." many other interesting projects up on his site too, see them here."

BMW Kinetic Sculpture

"One particularly stunning highlight from the 125 exhibits packed into the newly-renovated BMW Welt in Munich is a mechatronic installation by ART+COM, the Berlin-based interactive media company. The project uses 714 metal balls that are individually suspended one barely visible strings, creating an seemingly weightless, amorphous mass. Each ball lowers and retracts independently, which allows them to approximate almost any form.

The installation moves through a cycle of classic and contemporary BMW car shapes from throughout the company's 90-year history. In between cars, it goes through some impressive routines, showing the creation's versatility. Take a look at one visitor's video below."

War Games

"Hitler Moves East: A Graphic Chronicle, 1941-43 is a unique photography project from US artists David Levinthal and Garry Trudeau that was originally published in 1977. But the book, which documents the German invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II, isn’t quite what it appears to be at first glance. While all the images are photographs, they’re actually all of toy soldiers arranged upon a series of intricately modeled dioramas."

PostPanic + Postman Returns

Picture 3
"PostPanic returns with a second installment of the Postman, directed by Mishca Rozema. I remember how much I loved the first one they dropped to open their old reel. This one lives up to its predecessor with the same stark visuals, tripped-out, visceral intensity and audio that just makes you cringe."

People At The Opera

Opera17-thumb-522x522
"Bill Henson's photos of people at the opera, including a short interview with the photographer.

What I was interested in terms of Paris Opera series was that whole strange business of finding oneself with a whole lot of other people gathered in a darkened space, such as the opera, awaiting some special event. There is something quite magical about it. I've always found that people sitting in the dark just waiting for something is the most haunting sort of experience. It seemed to me it was a common experience, a universal thing that everyone feels, really, at some point or another."

Vintage French Photobooth Film Stars

2505183948_03a75cbb5b
"Checking out the photobooth pool on Flickr, I was amazed to find dozens of pictures of a man named Willy Michel posing repeatedly with numerous actors, dancers and comedians of French theatre and silent film.

Translated from this photo set:

For over 20 years, the photographer Willy Michel attempted to immortilize himself alongside his best Parisian clients: by tucking himself into a machine for which he was the promoter in France: the Photomaton.

Each photo is accompanied by an explanation of the actor's name and what is known of their resume (in French). Contributed by J. -C. (sic) Curtet, whose other sets of photos are entirely black and white vintage images of souvenir postcards and worldly wondrousness."

Check out the photo set here.

Deleted Scenes From Iron Man

INT. TONY STARK'S LIMO - DAY TONY STARK: Pull over... right here.
DRIVER: Where?
TONY STARK: At Burger King.
DRIVER: Are you serious?
TONY STARK: Didn't you hear me say the first thing I wanted after being tortured in the desert by terrorists for three months was a real American cheeseburger?
DRIVER: Yeah, sure... but Burger King?
TONY STARK: Yes.
DRIVER: Let me get this straight. You kept your heart beating with a car battery while risking your life to build a suit of armor with a built-in flame-thrower... so you could eat at Burger King.
TONY STARK: Yes. In fact, I got the idea for the flame-thrower while thinking about Burger King's great flame-broiled taste.
DRIVER: But there's an In-N-Out Burger just a few blocks away.
TONY STARK: I want Burger King.
DRIVER: Now that you're back, is the first car you're gonna drive a Chevy Malibu?
TONY STARK: What?
DRIVER: Well, that's like the Burger King of cars.
TONY STARK: Just order the cheeseburger.
DRIVER: Is the first girl you're going to sleep with Carnie Wilson?
TONY STARK: Order it!
BURGER KING EMPLOYEE: (OVER SPEAKER) Welcome to Burger King, may I take your order?
DRIVER: My boss, the smartest, richest, coolest man in the world, who can eat literally anything he wants, has chosen, as his first meal after being a held hostage by madmen in a cave in Afghanistan, a Burger King cheeseburger.
BURGER KING EMPLOYEE: (OVER SPEAKER) Is the first girl he's going to sleep with Carnie Wilson?

On The Streets With Bruce Gilden

"Hunting for characters on the streets of New York City with photographer Bruce Gilden. I wouldn’t like to be photographed by a stranger from such a close range but the outcomes are great. 'A lot of people walking in the city are like lost in thought. They’re not paying attention.'"

"Pressing the photographic paper against the tube, heat and light emanating from the television are relayed. Producing its own light, the television image is self-inscribed, fulfilling the desire to span distances, making illusions more present."
